Tea For The Horses
As one of the artists for this charitable event, I was given a horse cutout and painted it as I was inspired.Later on in my life I lived on a finca in Costa Rica, riding horses every day. Then again Colorado and Arizona riding horses through the red rocks and then again in Utah riding horses through red rock canyon, I was moved to help the horses.

Through the years, the Woman’s Club has worked on projects as diverse as historic preservation, women’s suffrage, AIDS awareness, arts and culture programs and after school education projects, always keeping the scope of their work within the themes of promoting the family, preserving history, and supporting education and the arts in our community.
Today club members take a leadership role in historic preservation. They support the fine and performing arts in a significant way; creating and hosting an important juried arts exhibition in Miami Dade County for high school students as well as supporting stage performances by “Shakespeare in the Park” and the Crystal Parrot Players.
“This benefit for the horses is a perfect fit for us,” states Dolly MacIntyre, who is chairing the event. “In 1891, when the Club was founded, horses were a common sight in Coconut Grove. They’ve since been replaced by the automobile, but the history of Coconut Grove could not have been written without those long ago horses.”
“In fact,” according to Jeanette Jordan, president of South Florida SPCA Horse Rescue, “horses are still plentiful in South Florida. At any given time there are 500,000 horses in Florida. Florida ranks #3 in the nation in number of horses and these horses are still making a significant economic contribution to and impact on our society by their involvement in sporting events, the agricultural industry, providing services to the handicapped, especially autistic children, and assistance to law enforcement. But with so many horses, there are bound to be those who fall through the cracks and end up neglected, abused or abandoned. That’s where South Florida SPCA steps in, having rescued over 2,000 horses and other large animals over the past 20 years.”
So, on November 13th, horses will return to Coconut Grove. Among the rescue horses attending will be Topper, a gentle giant Clydesdale weighing over 1400 pounds, and his loveable little pal, Fiona, a miniature horse no bigger than a dog!
In addition to “tea, savories, scones & sweets,” the event will feature musical arrangements by Peggy Hall on the Baby Grand. The event will also include a special appearance by the City of Miami Mounted Police Patrol. There will be a fabulous silent auction of equestrian related art, jewelry, sculpture and many raffle items.
Festivities will include a tasting of the South Florida SPCA’s new wine label, “Rescue Vineyards,” featuring a selection of six excellent organic wines. “Each label will feature the picture and story of one of our actual rescued horses,” stated Jordan. “I like to say, “Have a sip. Save a horse.”
To add to the success of the “Tea,” the Woman’s Club is asking for support from local businesses. “Any donation – gift certificates, raffle or silent auction items, underwriting, monetary contributions will be greatly appreciated,” stated Dolly MacIntyre, chair of the event. If you wish to make a donation, you can contact Dolly at 305 460-0157.
South Florida SPCA Horse Rescue, a 501©3 not-for-profit, is one of the oldest, largest continuously operating horse rescues in the United States.
